Chennai - Post Report Question and Answers

Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?

Had our dog from US, and vet care was easily accessible and cheap. Not sure how great the care was, however, as we had some frequent skin conditions that were generally never addressed correctly. But mostly not a real concern. - Jan 2024

Vets ok, if you go to the right place. - Apr 2023

The vets were doing the best they can in a country that suffers from terrible animal neglect and poor sanitary conditions. Just don't bring a dog here. The weather is so hard on them. It is hard to find domestic staff who are not afraid of dogs. Guards and maintenance staff have still not figured out how to not be terrified of dogs and it becomes a frequent nuisance given how often you can expect to have people enter your apartment. There are plenty of critters from cats to street dogs to cows and geckos that you can feed temporarily while you live here. - Apr 2023

Great vets are available, good kennels are not. Your dog's environment depends on where you live, and it can vary. If your dog is used to clean, green spaces it will have a hard time adjusting. - Aug 2021

Yes, lots of good vets. - May 2019

I have heard some horror stories about animals in quarantine for months. - Aug 2018

Vets and kennel services are available. There's definitely bureaucracy around importing pets, but it's possible. Many people do it. - May 2018

In-home pet quarantine, 30 days. Surprisingly easy. I have managed to avoid vets and kennels, but if you ask around, you can find one or two decent options. Household help are sometimes keen to take on pet care for the overtime pay. I had heard that "Indians are afraid of dogs," and that's just not true. - May 2016
