Tel Aviv - Post Report Question and Answers

What are some typical ways to socialize, either with local people or with other expatriates? Are there groups or clubs that you can recommend?

You will meet expats at restaurants, gyms, bars, everywhere. I have become good friends with a group of expats by playing pickup basketball. There are also volleyball and running groups on the beach all the time. Just be social! - Jan 2022

We are lucky to have some local friends which has helped us build a social circle outside of the Embassy. There is a decent amount of co-mingling and social events between diplomats who live in Tel Aviv, but the distance between Tel Aviv and Herzliya tends to limit interactions between families and younger/childless couples. The distance between the apartment complexes is also a surprisingly limiting factor for socializing. - Apr 2021

The Diplomatic Spouse club is very active. Being a parent at the school, exercise groups, volunteer groups, there are some sports groups, book club, etc. There are so many English-speaking Israelis that you can likely find a local group for whatever you are interested in. - Oct 2019

The beach. Huge clubbing scene. Mountain biking is growing in popularity. Barbecuing. - Mar 2016

Outdoor activity at the beach, movies, eating out - plays, ballets, art galleries, sightseeing. We gather with close friends at least once a week. This is not a cohesive Embassy community - too big, too spread out. - Nov 2014

Many bars, clubs, restaurants. You need to make your own fun sometimes. - Apr 2013

If you are not outgoing, you won't be happy here. - Aug 2010

Restaurants, bars, lots of cafés right on the beach. Israelis are not big drinkers, so good luck finding a decently-mixed cocktail, but beer and wine are plentiful and often good. - Jul 2010

Clubs, music, bars, restaurants, sports- This is a first-world city with everything. - Feb 2009

Local restaurants are plentiful and excellent. - Sep 2008

One formal event a year, and your social life is up to you. - Jul 2008
