Conakry - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of car do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car do you advise not to bring?

Do not bring a hybrid or electric car. The more basic the car, the better (all Embassy motor pool cars have stick shifts, for example). Very inexpensive car repair services are available and convenient (they will come to your house, for example) - Sep 2022

High-clearance is a must, 4WD is nice if you go upcountry. Toyota, Nissan, Kia all seem to be common brands that you'll find mechanics and parts for. Renault is the taxi par excellence. Make sure you keep your car in good shape, and you'll avoid breakdowns at inopportune moments. Carjacking is a total non-issue as far as I know. - Jun 2021

Something with high clearance that can take a beating and continue running. - Nov 2019

Bring a HIGH CLEARANCE vehicle, anything else is a stretch at best. - May 2016

4WD, Toyota. - Dec 2014

An SUV is best. Even in the city the roads can be in very bad shape. There are some people who drive regular cars and they seem to do alright. - Sep 2009

Any car would be ok -- but it is only leaded gas. For safety, it is good to bring a bigger vehicle. We have a Honda CRV and feel like it is a decent car. Many people have large SUVs. Bring parts with you. - May 2009

Most people have SUVs, and they are genuinely necessary here. Because the streets are narrow and parking is often scarce, those with smaller SUVs are happier, I think. At least 2 wheel drive is needed to maneuver through the thick mud pits that the streets become during rainy season. Toyotas abound here and local mechanics can repair minor/routine things without difficulty. Ship spare parts. Minor accidents are common so an older SUV is probably perfect. - Mar 2008
