Windhoek - Post Report Question and Answers

Do you have any recommendations regarding mobile phones? Did you keep your home-country plan or use a local provider?

I only used my work provided local phone. - Jan 2021

The main cell phone carrier is MTC. You can either get a contract through MTC (if you receive a work phone it will be through contract with MTC) or pick up an MTC/Tango pre-paid chip and pay-as-you-go. You just need to make sure that the cell phone that you bring has been unlocked by your previous cell phone carrier, as they are not allowed to unlock cell phones here. - Jan 2016

We brought ours from the States and got local SIM cards and have been just fine--the embassy issues phones to employees. - May 2013

Most cell phones work fine and there are a couple of service providers. Costs seem reasonable and you can get a pay-as-you-go plan. - Jan 2013

MTC is pay as you go. Embassy staff are issued contract cell phones, but family members use pay as you go. Much cheaper than in the U.S. or Europe. - Jul 2012
