Ankara - Post Report Question and Answers
What kind of vehicle(s) including electric ones do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, infrastructure, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car or vehicles do you advise not to bring?
The highway infrastructure in Turkiye is very good, so four wheel drive is generally not needed. There are many tunnels going through mountainous areas and they are impressive! Electric vehicles are becoming much more common and the EV infrastructure is keeping up. You can find EV charging stations in many apartment complexes and around the city and between cities, including at rest stops. Availability of parts will vary depending on the type of car you import, but there are good mechanics and generally cheaper than in the U.S. In Ankara, winter tires are required. - Sep 2025
Small SUVs are the new thing here, but essentially you’ll see every kind of car. No more risk to cars than in the US. Service is easy, though you may randomly stumble over a parts problem or two if you have a US spec car, since everything here is geared around EU spec. It’s also very easy to buy a new car here tax-free - though, again, it’ll be EU spec. For electric, Tesla recently launched in Turkey, and the country has a domestic version as well that is starting production. The charging infrastructure is still being built out but they’re working on it. (The embassy has two chargers available.) - Nov 2023
