Ulaanbaatar - Post Report Question and Answers

Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?

We don’t have pets but plenty of people do. Many adopt dogs and cats here. I’m told it is a hassle and very expensive to bring dogs here, especially large dogs. - Jan 2024

Cats and dogs do not need to be quarantined upon entry into Ulaanbaatar. There are a few vets that pet owners have said are good. If you have a dog, note that Mongolians are generally afraid of dogs and they are required to wear a muzzle on the street. However, there are a few good places in the city to walk them, in addition to the hills that surround Ulaanbaatar. Star Apartment had space to walk your dog but no enclosed dog park. - Aug 2022

Yes. There is one vet that most people go to but there is more than one in UB. Kennel services may be another story. No quarantine required and very easy to import. Travel in winter may not be possible for cargo animals. - Sep 2020

One good English-speaking, American-trained vet service. It gets very cold in winter. - Aug 2020

We used 'UB Vet' who offer medical and boarding services of a good standard. - Feb 2015

No. However, fleas in cats and dogs, and parvo in dogs is rampant. Ensure that your four-legged friend is well-vaccinated before, during and after your assignment in Mongolia. - Feb 2011
