How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?
People you run into typically will not be conversant in English. You can check out at the grocery store without speaking Japanese, but any other transactions or conversations will be almost impossible with knowing Japanese. It can be tricky in a taxi. Best to have destination written down in Japanese. - Sep 2011
