What is the typical dress code at work and in public places? Is formal dress ever required?

At work its very much business casual unless there is a high-profile visit. In public, it is a conservative Muslim country. Even Western women don’t wear anything too revealing. The beach is a different story and expats can pretty much wear whatever they would at home. - Jan 2023


Conservative, especially for women. Covered knees and shoulders and loose-fitting clothing is appropriate. At the one expat beach however women can wear western style swimsuits, including two pieces. - Aug 2021


Conservative Muslim country, so no short-shorts, no tank tops, and no mini skirts. While outside of expat areas cover your shoulders to avoid people starting don’t wear anything revealing in public, as it will draw attention. Most women here are veiled and wear the local dress is called a malefa. - Aug 2021


Dress code at work is business casual but formal for meetings. A European influence in formality in language and dress are respected in the workplace due to the cultural influences. - Sep 2020


Depends. Suits are typical for business environments (embassy, banks, international businesses) despite the heat, although I tend to think of Nouakchott as a fairly relaxed (forgiving) enviroment. - Apr 2019
