We Are Non-Profit

Tales from a Small Planet was created at the turn of the millennium by a group of U.S. Foreign Service spouses who had previously collaborated on the "Spouses' Underground Newsletter" (SUN).

Over the years, Talesmag has helped thousands of international employees and family members, including those on diplomatic, corporate, NGO and educational assignments, evaluate potential postings and share the joys and frustrations of a mobile lifestyle. With this revision of our website, we have simplified navigation and improved our Real Post Reports and Real School Reports, while continuing our tradition of offering insightful, funny and informative stories from expats all over the world. We hope you enjoy the read!

We are a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit organization. Please consider making a donation to support our operations.

About Tales' Archives

Our site was founded in 2000 and in 2013 it was streamlined to make it more user-friendly, remove outdated material, and focus on our three main services: the Real Post Reports, the Real School Reports, and high-quality, edited stories that tell "what it's really like to live there."

We did not move all of our articles and reports from 2000 through 2013 to the new format, but we still have them in storage, and we'll periodically re-publish some of the best of the older material. If you are looking for a story previously published on our site, or if you'd like to request its republication, please contact us at And thanks for reading Tales from a Small Planet!

Our Mission Statement

Tales from a Small Planet collects and freely shares honest, unbiased information, in the form of city reports, school reviews and essays from volunteer contributors, about "what it's really like to live there" in cities and countries around the world, with the aim of helping international workers and family members (including diplomats, businesspeople, educators, international development workers, and others) as they decide where to live or prepare for an assignment.
