The Art of Coming Home

by Craig Storb

Storti begins with an examination of the difficulties faced by returnees in general. He then defines the four stages of reentry: leave-taking, the honeymoon, reverse culture shock and readjustment, discussing what to expect at each stage.

Noting the substantial emotional and financial costs of an unsuccessful reentry, Storb next looks in depth at the specific issues faced by returning employees. Readers will gain a greater appreciation for the challenges confronting the returning employee, and also learn what both the employee and employer can do to improve the adjustment process.

Storb next examines the issues spouses, teenagers and young children encounter upon reentry, offering them advice for dealing with reentry both before and after departure. Teenagers will find especially valuable a section that focuses on their particular problems.

A final chapter addresses the reentry of four specific groups: high school exchange students, Peace Corps volunteers, military personnel and their families, and missionaries and their children.

In the end, this book will make returning home a more integrated part of the overseas experience rather than a frustrating and disappointing conclusion. - -Description by the publisher
