Beyond
the Chestnut Trees
by Maria Bauer
This absorbing and remarkable memoir received warm praise
from readers and reviewers alike upon its hardcover publication.
It is impossible not to be moved and transported back in
time by this masterfully written reminiscence of a woman
who returns to Prague, the city of her youth, after a forty-year
absence. Czechoslovakia between two world wars was idyllic
as it was turbulent and the people who played an important
part in Bauer's life were fascinating, sometimes eccentric,
loving, and moving as well. A brilliant literary debut.

Daughter
of Persia: A Woman's Journey from Her Father's Harem Through
the Islamic Revolution
by Dona Munker, Sattareh Farman Farmaian
This wide-ranging autobiography begins with a history of
the Persian people from ancient times through the rise of
the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979. Sattareh Farman Farmaian,
born in the early 1920s, grows up in her father's compound,
one of many children by one of his many wives. Her father
is an ardent believer in education and supports Sattareh's
determination to became the first female in her family to
receive an advanced degree. In time, she realizes her dream
of opening the Teheran School of Social Work and teaches
health and hygiene to hundreds of students over the years.
Immersing herself totally in her work, she chooses not to
speak up about the abuse of power by the corrupt Iranian
government or against the Shah and his lust for material
possessions. When the Shah's government collapses, she is
accused of supporting his injustices. Despite her work of
the last twenty years, she is kidnapped, interrogated, and
forced to leave Iran. Daughter of Persia is a phenomenal
read, offering a personal look at how both the Shah and
the United States government choose to see only what is
beneficial for them. Sattareh Farman Farmaian has written
an important book, both for its history and its life-story.

They
Only Laughed Later: Tales of Women on the Move
by Carol Allen and Richard Hill, Editors
This collection of essays is the product of a series of
'Women On the Move' conferences, which brought together
expatriate women from over twenty countries. Their concerns
were mutual: to share experience in meeting the challenges
that confront women who move to strange lands in pursuit
of their own or their husbands' careers.
Some of this experience is resumed in this collection of
essays, many of them written by published authors, all of
whom were fresh from one or more assignments abroad. While
there may seem precious little to laugh about in the midst
of so much mobility, the truth is that hilarity lurks in
the corners of most moves. Aspects of expatriate life evoked
in the book include general culture shock, homesickness,
language confusion, change of climate, adaptation to cultural
differences, and repatriation.
They Only Laughed Later is a pat-on-the-back and
a keep-up-the-good-spirits to all the women who have made
and are making the most of living abroad. It is a gentle
prod, an outstretched hand, a go-for-it to those who find
coping abroad scary and insurmountable. --Description by

Home: Who Are You?
Tales of a Foreign Service Family
by Gene and Kathryn Schmiel
These fascinating vignettes show Foreign Service personnel
in action, heading off problems with other nations, reconciling
differences, negotiating workable agreements, defusing conflicts,
and generally steering Americans out of harm's way while
at the same time coping with the myriad unexpected yet often
deeply fulfilling aspects of overseas living.
In one vignette, Gene describes his rescue of a wayward
young traveler from the clutches of an over-eager police
officer who (wrongly) believes he has captured the fugitive
Patty Hearst. In another, he recalls the grotesque difficulty
of recovering and shipping home the mortal remains of an
American sea captain whose life ended in a steamy tropical
port with limited refrigeration facilities. Kathryn highlights
the challenges of maintaining an American-style home life
in a constantly changing, sometimes hostile environment.
But her essays point up opportunities as well as difficulties:
When a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier makes a port call, she
takes advantage of the chance to show the children a glorious
example of American technology. --Description by Amazon.com

The
Adventure of Working Abroad: Hero Tales from the Global
Frontier
by Joyce Sautters Osland
Hundreds of thousands of Americans flock to overseas assignments
each year in this new global economy. Now, a well-versed
expatriate provides insight and important tips that will
help expatriates make sense of their experience as a whole,
better equipping them to cope with their repatriation.
The Adventure of Working Abroad won't prescribe what to
pack or how to find the train station, but it will provide
a pragmatic framework for understanding--and mastering--the
predictable challenges of each stage in the expatriate journey.
Here thirty-five experienced expatriates tell in their own
words of the unexpected perils and enormous opportunities,
the turmoil and triumphs, or life in an exotic new world.
Osland uses their personal stories to provide insights and
important tips that will help expatriates adjust to diverse
cultural norms, face new responsibilities and sudden autonomy,
and better equip themselves for the difficulties of repatriation.
Osland also explores why U.S. companies are not as proficient
as European and Japanese firms at preparing employees to
work abroad and, as a result, suffer higher early-return
rates. She provides compelling and persuasive remedies that
will aid businesses and institutions in preparing their
workers before they leave home, supporting them during their
assignments abroad, and learning from them upon their return.
