What typical restaurants, food delivery services, and/or takeout options are popular among expatriates?
Where to start. Cape Town is the food capital of the country and maybe Africa. Most visiting Americans say the steaks in particular are better quality and less expensive than anything available Stateside. Cape Malay food is delicious and less spicy than its Southeast Asian counterpart. There's a significant population of Indian descent and Indian food is plentiful. There are some local restaurants, like Test Kitchen, for which you'll need to make reservations months in advance, and in general during tourist high season (December-February), at any nicer restaurant you'll want to get reservations a few days in advance at least.
For fast food, there are plenty of McDonalds, KFCs, Dominos and Pizza Hut as well as local pizza chains; South African chain Nando's, which has spread across Africa and Europe and has some American locations, is a delicious alternative. South Africans also love burgers and they make them big. Many local restaurants will do home delivery, although for some you have to go through a third-party delivery service that tacks on an extra charge. - Oct 1, 2017
The restaurants are amazing and quite affordable. McDonald's and KFC are here but there is no real reason to eat there when you can get better food for roughly the same price. - May 13, 2014
McDonald's is here and for about the price you pay in the U.S., but honestly--SKIP IT!! Even the local fast food--Nando's chicken--is way better. Cape Tonians are true "foodies" and the restaurant selection is endless and extremely reasonably priced. Almost every neighborhood has a local farmers market on weekends and you can easily spend your weekends going from one to the other. Several of Conde Nast and other magazines' "50 best in the world" are located here--recently, my husband and I split an appetizer, each had a main course, and shared a dessert at one of the best steak houses in the world (Conde Nast Traveller) with drinks and spent a grand total of US$50. - Aug 26, 2013
McD's and KFC are the only USA brands of fast food, but Nando's (a local chain) is better by far. Wonderful local restaurants at very cheap prices compared to major Western cities. - Oct 28, 2007
