Are credit cards widely accepted and safe to use locally? Are ATMs common and do you recommend using them? Are they safe to use?

If you are from the U.S. you cannot use credit cards or ATMs. Europeans and Canadians use them, but have to be vigilant for unexplained charges on credit cards. - May 4, 2014
