Are credit cards widely accepted and safe to use locally? Are ATMs common and do you recommend using them? Are they safe to use?

Use cash. - Aug 2, 2016
Credit cards are technically accepted in many places; however, the machines very rarely work. Cash is where it's at. ATMs are not difficult to find. The Embassy has an ATM. - Aug 2, 2015
We use our credit card in many places and the ATM at the Embassy. We have also used ATMs around town on occasion, especially if we need euros. - Aug 12, 2014
ATMs are all over the city and work fine with U.S. bank cards. We use our debit card at Carrefour, and that's it. Everywhere else we use cash. There is a bank with an ATM inside the embassy. - May 18, 2013
We've used credit cards occasionally at the big stores, but that's about it. There's an ATM at the Embassy, and there are a few others in malls that have been used without any incidents. - Dec 27, 2012
Be very careful about using credit cards and ATMs here, there is a risk. There is an ATM at the US embassy, and many places only take cash. - Oct 1, 2011
ATMs are everywhere now. Credit cards are accepted at most places, including the grocery stores. - Mar 31, 2008
