Who we are and who we reach

Tales from a Small Planet (www.talesmag.com)  is a literary and informational online magazine and resource center operated through a not-for-profit organization. The majority of our site users are affiliated with the U.S. Foreign Service, or wish to be, though we are also getting users in private industries, NGOs, aide organizations, and others. As of September 2003, we have approximately 20,000 visitors transiting our home page a month.

Advertising and Sponsorship Possibilities

We have a flexible approach to advertising, and if you do not find something listed here that meets your needs, we would be glad to discuss alternatives. Since we are a not-for-profit organization, we encourage all potential advertisers to make a tax deductible contribution to our mission, in addition to any advertising funds committed. Tales’ survival depends on its contributions. Advertising is offered only as a service to our readers.

  • Please note that all advertisements are static. We believe that animation would be inconsistent with our site design.
  • Prices are quoted in three-month increments, unless otherwise noted. A six-month commitment will be discounted 10%. A one-year commitment will be discounted 15%.
  • The advertiser must provide the banner, which must be optimized for fast loading. Please note that many of our readers do not have fast internet connections. If your banner is too big, you will lose these users. If you do not have a banner, we can direct you to one of our designers who will create one for a fee.
  • All banners can include links to your home page, opening in a new page.
  • As an advertiser, we will give you free access to our site statistics.

Home Page

Our home page receives the most hits, upwards to 20,000 a month.  On this page, we offer a logo button, 175x100 pixels, for placement in either of the first two columns, or a button of 140x140 for our third column. The cost of any one of these buttons is $300 for three months.

Message Home

This page is especially popular with persons entering the Foreign Service. Banner size here is 468x60 pixels. The cost of this page is $200 for three months.

 

Sponsorship of an entire section of the message board may also be arranged. Our tech people tell us we can have your ad appear on every message. The cost of this is $300 for three months.

Real Post Report Home

Real Post Reports are visited by hundreds of people every week planning moves abroad. It is the gateway to our most popular section. Because of our layout here, we have options in banner sizes. There is a single banner of 468x60 pixels at the top of the page. We can also run smaller banners of  up to 175x100 pixels in the right hand column or in among the Real Post Report summaries. The cost for the large banner is $300 for three months. The small banners are $150 for three months.

Resource Pages

We urge potential advertisers to consider sponsoring one of these pages. Sponsorship will be offered with an appropriate annual donation. Sponsorship will include a linked banner and a possibility of offering some content for the page. There will be no content control, and it would continue to be Tales’ discretion as to what links will be included on these pages, but we are glad to receive suggestions for additional links. The minimum suggested donation for such sponsorship is $300 a year.

If you are a commercial entity who wishes to have a link on one of our resource pages, we request that you make a donation to our fundraising effort. The suggested donation for a text link is $25 a year.


Real Post Reports

Sponsorship of individual Real Post Report countries is encouraged for organizations and/or businesses with interests in those countries. Traffic on these pages varies widely and no guarantees can be made in this regard. For a minimum $75 a year donation to Tales from a Small Planet, you can have a banner on the country page announcing that you are sponsoring that country. See as an example this resource page: http://www.talesmag.com/resources/glbt.shtml. We would urge you to help us round out our links with yours and other relevant information. We would also urge you to help us update our Real Post Reports for that country as appropriate. If a country has reports on more than one city, additional sponsorship notices may be placed on those additional city reports for $25 each a year. Country sponsorship is exclusive.

Small Planet Notices

We periodically send notices to our e-mail list of more than 500 announcing what is new on the site. We will periodically give thanks to our donor organizations in these notices. Please discuss this with us, if you would like a mention.

 

Contract Terms

Acceptance by Tales from a Small Planet of an advertisement shall be consistent with the terms of this plan. The advertiser must provide the graphic banner and link for approval by Tales.

 

Upon approval of the banner and link, and receipt by Tales of payment for the advertisement, Tales shall insert the advertisement into the agreed upon location in its site and maintain it using reasonable efforts for the agreed-upon period. Please note that Tales from a Small Planet uses a third-party server, and access to the site may, on occasion, be interrupted due to events beyond the control of Tales. Should the advertiser become aware of a disruption of service, the advertiser must report the same to Tales, and Tales will make every effort to reinstate service expeditiously.

 

Should service be interrupted more than 72 hours, the advertiser may request that the term of its contract be extended to make up for lost time.
